George Anthony Waller - 1946 to 2023

My father, George Anthony Waller, passed away on December 25, 2023. He requested no obituary be published in the newspaper. I have a sense it was in part his frugal nature which was behind this request (obituaries can now cost $100 or more to file). Mostly, though, he simply didn’t see a need for a newspaper version in a small local paper. His friends already knew this information about him, and every detail of his life is fully documented in genealogical databases.

That being said, in the past, as part of a massive about-me document, he had always maintained an obituary for himself and updated it regularly.

I am sharing George’s own most recent obituary version with you here. These were not ‘private thoughts’ so I feel fine sharing them. It’s more that he didn’t see the need to pay a newspaper to share them with people who already knew him. His entire life and family network is already documented down to the tiniest detail in genealogy databases, which he considered the important thing.

Note that George later requested no funeral services and no memorial services.

George Anthony Waller was born 8 May 1946 in Hammond, IN, the son of the late George Frank John and Jane Helen (Warren) Waller and grew up in TN, TX, NY, Rio de Janeiro and CT. In 1964, he was graduated from Staples H.S., Westport, CT. George served unenthusiastically in the USAF from 1967-1971 at the Pentagon and was graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1973.

From 1974 to 2002 he worked at the University of Connecticut Library in information technology. His interests were family, genealogy, volleyball, bridge, webpage creation, and early rock music. George was a founder and board member of the USGenWeb. He was a life member of the National Genealogical Society, American Mensa, and of the TripleNine Society. He was a Humanist and tried to live the motto “I Believe in Good”. On the other hand, he disliked spectator sports, hunting, fishing and was disinterested in pets. Fixing cars was anathema to him. Yes, as one may imagine, gardening was out too.

He leaves his lovely and loving partner Anne Gerard; and, is survived by his four children, Elizabeth Shea (Bob See) of Sutton, MA, Jennifer Mottram (Mike Stevens) of Florida, George “Cassion” Waller of Boulder, CO and Thamzen Carson (Charley) of Tucson AZ; eight grandchildren, James Shea, Dale Mottram, William Mottram, Kate Mottram, Artem Waller, Dakin Carson, Scottie Carson and Mabel Carson; two great-grandchildren, Liam Mottram and Aurora Sexton; three siblings, Rebecca Hall of Clarksville, TN, Blake Waller (Tammy) of Denmark, SC, and Bruce Waller (Laura) of Williston, SC; three ex-wives, Ann Waller (Len) of Sarasota, FL, Hillary Frye of West Hartford and Darlene Hull (Rene) of Tucson, AZ.

Funeral services are private and no flowers or contributions are requested.
